Adrian Shephard was deployed as part of the Hazardous Environment Combat Unit, a black-ops division tasked with containing the dimensional breach at Black Mesa. Unlike the scientists trapped inside, HECU forces were sent in to eliminate evidence and personnel. However, Shephard soon discovers that his own unit views him as expendable collateral damage once the mission objectives shift from containment to total sterilization of the site. This campaign highlights the brutal reality of the cover-up following the Resonance Cascade. While Freeman fights through anomalies to reach Xen, Shephard battles through the facility's perimeter and surface installations. His journey underscores the theme that in the eyes of higher command, both scientists and soldiers are merely resources to be consumed or discarded when the truth threatens national security.

Smoke choked the corridor as Adrian kicked open the blast door. The radio crackled with static, orders dissolving into white noise. He checked his ammo count; barely enough for one more hallway. Behind him, the alien shriek echoed off concrete walls. Ahead, HECU breachers moved like ghosts in their heavy armor, weapons raised not at the monsters, but at the terrified researchers huddled against the wall. Adrian lowered his rifle, realizing the true enemy wore dog tags.

The campaign begins with Shephard's squad deploying into Black Mesa to secure the site following the initial catastrophe. As they push deeper, standard military protocol clashes with the surreal horror of Xen entities invading reality.
