Zombies

Reanimated victims of the alien invasion serving as mindless drones.

Zombies are reanimated human corpses brought back to a shambling state of aggression by parasitic organisms known as Headcrabs. Originally encountered during the Black Mesa Incident, they became a pervasive symbol of the alien occupation on Earth. They represent a tragic loss of humanity, serving as disposable threats that overrun facilities and cities alike.

Lore & Background

While they lack intelligence, their sheer numbers make them dangerous. They do not feel pain and will continue to attack until physically destroyed. Some variants, introduced during the resistance campaigns, exhibit increased speed, forcing survivors to adapt their combat tactics. The Combine appear indifferent to these creatures, viewing them as collateral damage of their biological warfare rather than a direct military asset.

In Their Own Story

The flickering light of the corridor cast long shadows against the peeling paint. Gordon paused, hearing the wet drag of feet on concrete. From the darkness emerged a figure in a torn lab coat, its head lolling unnaturally. A small alien face pressed into the forehead, twitching with every step. The creature hissed, arms outstretched, and lunged without hesitation.

Reader's Guide

Zombies possess no formal hierarchy, operating instead as a mindless swarm driven by parasitic instinct. Unlike Combine forces, they lack command structures or strategic objectives beyond immediate aggression toward living targets. Their affiliation is biological rather than political; they are humans repurposed by the Headcrab parasite into disposable infantry. While some wear Security uniforms from City 17, this indicates origin rather than loyalty to the occupation forces. Technology usage is accidental; infected individuals may wield weapons found on their person before death, but they cannot maintain or manufacture gear. Internal conflict does not exist within a zombie horde, as individual cognition has been entirely overwritten by the alien organism. They do not negotiate, surrender, or retreat. Their primary function in the ecosystem of Earth under Combine rule is that of a hazard—a biological weapon left unchecked to cull populations and spread infection further. Survivors must treat every infected encounter as lethal, regardless of whether the victim was once a scientist, guard, or civilian. The lack of organization makes them unpredictable; they can appear anywhere from dark alleyways to industrial complexes without warning.
